Ground has officially broken on a $30 million Filipino Community Village (FCV) that will see construction of a 95-unit housing complex that will incorporate affordable housing for seniors, expanded learning program for youth, and culturally specific social services for the Filipino community and other neighboring communities.
Construction of the FCV, which is a project of the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) and other partners, is expected to finish construction in 15 months.
“This is indeed a wonderful project for Filipino seniors who are low-income,” Modesto Mauricio, of Seattle, said in Tagalog. “Many of us need to find a place to live that we can afford.”
Mauricio joined more than 200 other people at the groundbreaking ceremony held on Sep. 18 at the Filipino Community Center in Seattle. The event was attended by many local and regional politicians and dignitaries, many of whom have championed the cause of FCV.
“We are coming together in this city in so many ways ...this project shows what happens when you empower a community,” Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan told the audience. “This shows that, yes, in Seattle, we can do it!”
The project is being funded through state, county, and local funds, as well as from money raised over the years through fundraising efforts. The project will be built on property adjacent to the Filipino Community Center.
